European Standard for Flammable Cabinets

1.Standard classification and scope of application

EN 14470-1： For flammable liquid safety cabinets, the cabinet structure, fire resistance performance (such as fire resistance time), ventilation system, etc. are specified and applicable to scenarios such as laboratories and factories.
EN 14470-2： For pressurized gas cylinder safety cabinets, it is required that the cabinet body be explosion-proof, pressure resistant, and have gas leakage control of 15.

2.Fire rating and testing requirements

Fire resistance time classification: Divided into four categories based on external fire resistance ability:
TYPE 15： Fire resistance for 15 minutes (temperature rise in cabinet ≤ 180K) 48;
TYPE 30/60/90： Fire resistant for 30/60/90 minutes, suitable for high-risk environments.
Testing method: Simulate a fire environment to test the integrity of the cabinet structure, insulation performance (such as temperature control inside the cabinet), and sealability.

3.Structural design and functional requirements

Double layer steel plate+fire-resistant layer: The cabinet should adopt a double-layer metal structure, with fire-resistant insulation materials (such as ceramic fibers) filled in the middle.
Automatic door closing device: In case of a fire, the cabinet door needs to automatically close to prevent the spread of the fire.
Ventilation system: Optional fireproof ventilation openings can be installed to balance the pressure inside and outside the cabinet and filter harmful gases.

4.Authentication and Update Dynamics

CE certification: Safety cabinets that comply with EN 14470 standards must pass CE certification to ensure that their fire performance meets the standards.
2023 version update: EN 14470-1 will release a new version in July 2023, the old standard will be invalidated in January 2024, and the new version will strengthen fire resistance testing and material requirements.

5.Application and selection suggestions

Scenario matching: Select the corresponding standard safety cabinet based on the storage type (liquid/gas cylinder), and prioritize TYPE 30 or higher level in the laboratory.
Certification mark: Confirm the product label with “EN 14470-1:2023” or “EN 14470-2” and CE mark.
